<image:caption>Cytadela Park Throughout the war, today’s Cytadela (then Fort Winiary) remained in the hands of the Wehrmacht. A part of its infrastructure served as a prison for Polish, British and Soviet POWs. Also, Nazis used the area to set up a test range for the Poznań branch of the Deutsche Waffen und Munitionsfabriken (DWM). Towards the end of the war, Germans brought Poles to work at Fort Winiary. Their chief task was to clear away the bodies of German soldiers. It is also highly likely that armaments division of Siemens had a number of shops there, which relied on forced labour of the Polish population. After the bombardments of 1944, some of the production of the DWM was relocted to Fort Winiary as well.</image:caption>

Since 1933, the business was a close collaborator of the Nazi regime. The Krzesiny plant produced planes for the Luftwaffe, mainly the Focke-Wulf’s flagship fighter Fw 190 Würger. Following successive allied bombing raids, part of the production was relocated to Poznań. The construction of state-of-the-art production halls and airfield began in 1941, and the plant went operational on December 1st, 1941, producing airplane parts, wings and fuselages. Fairly soon, Focke-Wulf set up production shops and warehouses in Forts I, I a, II and II a. In the final stages of the war, the plant began working on the Ta 154, Focke-Wulf’s prototype fighter.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Hipolit Cegielski Metal Works Deutsche Waffen und Munitionsfabriken, Hipolit Cegielski Metal Works in Poznań, ul. 28 Czerwca 1956 Roku Deutsche Waffen und Munitionsfabriken (DWM) were a German armaments conglomerate with headquarters in Karlsruhe. On November 1st, 1939, DWM bought the confiscated Hipolit Cegelski Metal Works and switched most production lines to fulfil their military contracts. Two neighbouring premises, i.e. the furniture factory once belonging to Nowakowski i Synowie and Marecki’s sweets factory were annexed to the main plant. The DWM site in Poznań produced mainly munitions and equipment for the German armed forces – motorcycles, cartridge cases, primers and fuses, as well as continued the pre-war production of railway engines. Forced labour was used on an extensive scale, with approximately 20,000 forced labourers working there towards the end of the war. Poles were made to work 16 hours a day, all week long. Many of the DWM’s workforce were billeted in the primitive barracks in Opolska street. Since the factory was important for the war effort, the plant was bombed by allied air force in 1944, but the production continued despite damage. Fearing further air-raids, DWM decided to disperse its activities, relocating to Fort V, Fort IX and some of the installations at Fort Winiary.</image:caption>

For a year, the camp operated simultaneously with Fort VII in Poznań, whose profile was similar. After Fort VII camp had been liquidated to make room for armaments industry (Telefunken), its inmates and the personnel were transferred to Żabikowo. The camp served two institutions of Nazi repression: Prison of the Security Police (Polizeigefängnis der Sicherheitspolizei) and the Correctional Labour Camp Poznań–Junikowo (Arbeitserziehungslager Posen-Lenzingen). Both were subordinated to the Gestapo in Poznań. The camp in Żabikowo was intended for the inhabitants of Poznań and Greater Poland. The camp was liquidated in 1944, and its inmates were transferred to Żabikowo. <image:caption>Rusałka One of the largest projects undertaken by the Nazi authorities in Poznań was the so-called western green wedge, a wooded area extending from Lake Kierskie as far as Sołacki Park. Its central point was Lake Rusałka, an artificial reservoir which had to be dug chiefly by prisoners from the camp in Krzyżowniki, located in the school building in Leśnowolska street. Apart from Jewish inmates of the camp, groups of inhabitants of Poznań would also be sent there to work. The latter were forbidden, under severe penalties, to disclose anything about the treatment of Jews, and were to be kept separate. However, Jan Jankowiak from Poznań became the author of the most extensive account of the terrible ordeal of Jews. In an act than was nothing short of heroic, he began to bring Jewish workers food, which got him arrested and sent to Gross-Rosen and Buchenwald, where he spent the rest of the war. His account, presented at the Jewish Historical Institute, relates how during the initial stages of the work 11 Jews were killed when German combat engineers blew up the Bogdanka battery which had stood there. We also learn that many of those who wandered off from their allotted spot, were trampled under hooves and dragged behind horses at the nearby race course. Rusałka (named Elsensee) opened for the public (Germans only) in summer 1943.</image:caption>

The brewery experienced its heyday before the Great War, but the interwar years were a time of steady decline, with the company changing its owners twice. It was probably then that most of the production facilities were relocated to Sucha street in Poznań. After the outbreak of World War II, the brewery was confiscated by the Germans, and sold in 1942 to a new German owner, who set up the company called Huggerbrauerei GmbH. Production of beer continued throughout the war, though its volume remains unknown. Naturally, the workforce at the production facility included Poles. In 1944, Germans converted the brewery’s cellars to air-raid shelters.</image:caption>

A primary school functioned there before the war, while now it provides premises for the P. Potworowski Secondary School of Plastic Arts. In November 1941, prisoners of that camp were sent to work in the Kasprowicz Park, where the event hall Arena stands today. To the German authorities, that undeveloped area was perfectly suited for a new zoo, but for unknown reasons the work there was abandoned. Professor Lech Trzeciakowski, who as a child spent the years of Nazi occupation in Poznań’s Łazarz, describes the sight of Jews being marched to work in the park in his reminiscences: “Life under occupation now showed its cruel facet every day. A part of today’s Kasprowicz Park was a derelict area, separated from streets by a fence. I used to call it the “Wild Fields”. Germans were doing some earthwork there. The rumour was that the zoological garden was to be moved there, but I do not know if there was any truth in that. One day I was playing in front of my house, as usual, and saw a column of Jews in today’s Gustawa Potworowskiego street, walking to work in the “Wild Fields”. For many nights to follow, I would wake up sweating, tormented by nightmares”. The camp had its subcamp with 97 prisoners. It was located on the present-day grounds of the International Fair, near the junction of Bukowska and Grunwaldzka. Before the war it was a site of the St. Martin cemetery, which the prisoners had to clear away, recovering whatever Germans found valuable from the coffins.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Śniadeckich Academy of Medicine The edifice was built for the Polish General Exhibition of 1929, as the Palace of Arts. Once the exhibition had ended, the building was taken over by the University of Poznań, which established its Collegium Anatomicum there. Given that it was equipped with cremation furnace, bodies of prisoners of labour camps for Jews used to be incinerated there. A total of 1,702 cremations were recorded, though the figure does not reflect the actual count of the victims. An unspecified number of prisoners were buried where they worked or else the dead were burned at the trash incineration plant in Wilczak street. The furnace at the Collegium Anatomicum also served to cremate bodies of inmates from Fort VII, the prison in Młyńska street and the Żabikowo camp. The overall number of recorded cremations of victims of the Nazi terror amounts to approximately 4,500.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Poznań‒Franowo Railway Station The idea to relocate the freight station outside the city’s centre had already been conceived by the Poznań urban planners in the interwar years. For the Germans, it was an issue of prime concern, as Poznań was an important junction on the eastward route, channelling transports for the future offensive against the Soviets. Designs for the construction of extended shunting station in Franowo were developed in 1940. The works began the following year, with most of it being carried out by Jewish forced labourers. Jewish prisoners were also working on the railroad network in other locations in the Poznań area: in Kobylnica, Swarzędz, or on the route Poznań‒Dębiec–Antoninek.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Lake Malta The so-called Malta Wedge was to be another green wedge in the city’s layout, complementing its western counterpart. German urban planners designed it as an analogous leisure area, inclusive of an artificial lake, for Poznań’s German population. As in the case of the westward wedge and its Lake Rusałka, the project was to be carried out using forced labour: Jews and Jewesses imprisoned in Fort Radzwiłł (the Cathedral Redoubt) on the Cathedral Island, at the Municipal Stadium between Dolna Wilda and Droga Dębińska streets, in Antoninek, or the Cybinatal camp which stood where Lake Malta is now to be found. There was another camp in the vicinity, i.e. at the junction of Wileńska and Krańcowa: Lager DWM (housing prisoners working at the Deutsche Waffen und Munitionsfabriken – the former Hipolit Cegielski Works). As with Rusałka, the number of people who died or were killed during construction cannot be precisely determined. Companies which exploited prisoners of the above camps include Dip. Ing. Hans Pracht Straßen-u. Tiefbau (Cybinatal camp), Dip. Ing. Kurt Zindt Tiefbau und neuzeitlicher Straßenbau, Gotha, Bauunternehmung Posen (Lager DWM). The company Max Hamann, Tief, Beton- und Eisenbetonbau, Bauunternehmung also took advantage of the Jewish workforce involved in digging the basin of Lake Malta.</image:caption>

The company was appointed a German administrator, who employed Poles. Just as in other sequestered or German-administrated companies, Polish employees received very low wages. After deductions arising from additional taxes, their remuneration was even 50-70% lower than the compensation paid to German workers. These meagre earnings, which ensured hardly any livelihood, were a deliberate form of discrimination and a method of indirect extermination of the Nazi regime used against Poles.</image:caption>

<image:title>Munich - Memory in Practice - Munich-Giesing Agfa camera factory satellite concentration camp (Mollblock)</image:title>
<image:caption>The camp was set up in September 1944 and was occupied by about 500 female concentration camp prisoners from various countries (mainly Poland, the Soviet Union, the Netherlands, Yugoslavia, Belgium, France) who had been brought to Munich from Ravensbrück concentration camp. The accommodation was an unfinished apartment block in Weißenseestraße, most of which was still under construction. Inside were two-storey beds, a few wooden tables, and stools. The camp was fenced in with barbed wire and guarded by a commanding officer, his deputy, and 11 female SS supervisors. The imprisoned women were used for unskilled work in the production of aircraft parts at the IG Farben camera factory (Agfa) in Tegernseer Landstraße. The hygienic conditions in the camp and the supply of food and clothing were extremely poor, so many women became seriously ill. When conditions deteriorated further in January 1945, some women refused to work in the factory in an extraordinary action. On 27 April 1945, the camp was dissolved and the women evacuated towards the Alps; they were liberated by US troops near Wolfratshausen. Adresse Weißenseestraße 7</image:caption>

<image:title>Munich - Memory in Practice - Allach concentration camp BMW</image:title>
<image:caption>This subcamp of the Dachau concentration camp housed prisoners of many nations who had to perform forced labour for the neighbouring BMW aircraft engine plants. Construction of the camp east of Dachauer Strasse began in March 1943 and was initially planned for 3,000 to 4,000 people. However, with the increasing demand for labour at BMW, the number of prisoners imprisoned there increased to about 10,000. In addition to aircraft engine production, they were also used for construction work. The number of prisoners who died or were directly murdered in the camp due to the hard work, inadequate care and accommodation can no longer be determined exactly. On 26 April 1945, some of the prisoners were forced on a death march towards the Alps. The prisoners who remained behind were liberated by US troops on 30 April 1945.
